The switch to solar energy (PV) is a big change — both financially and for the future. Many do so because they recognize the unique power of solar energy to save money in the long run and they’ll reduce the impact on families on the environment.

But how do you choose the company to work with? The following questions can be helpful to determine the PV installer that best suits your needs:

  • Do you know someone who has installed a PV system? This person can tell you a lot about what they learned and if they recommend the company they used.
  • Where can you get more recommendations? Homeowners can find helpful reviews online. is one of the many great options that you can use.

Experience is key when it comes to finding a trusted solar company. We like to ask:

  • How long have they been in business?
  • What is the track record of solar installers?
  • How many local installations has the company done?
  • Are they a turn-key operation or do they use subcontractors?
  • What products do they use — and what warranties do they offer?
  • Do they understand local laws and regulations for switching to solar energy?
  • Are they up to date with all of the incentives you should receive?

We also ask pointed questions about the process. You want to make sure they are ready to work and don’t make the mistake of cutting costs like using a template solar system when a custom system is needed. Remember that most of these questions will be answered initially when you are meeting with a very qualified dealer.

Another way to determine which solar installer is right for you is to weigh them against your financial options. There are many ways to buy a home PV system and there are many list prices for a PV system. We recommend using a reliable solar installer to provide the right balance. What are the funding options? There are three main options: buying with cash, a solar loan, or leasing. Not all companies offer leasing. Your consultant should be able to walk you through the buying options.

Is a solar system worth the money? No one wants to pay more than he has to do. However, when it comes to solar power the initial cost of the system and the cost per watt do not give a complete picture. Work with your solar installer to find a system that meets your energy needs and is reasonably priced for your home.

But there is much to be done. Your Solar Installation Contractor will handle the permits, roof inspection, and other important duties including working with your homeowner’s association and communicating with the utility company. Throughout the process, the project manager should keep you informed. The work permit should be closed by the utility or local electricity inspector after the completion of the work. Then, you are ready to see the benefits of solar energy.

With the right installer, you can get a custom solar system that fits your household’s needs and saves money over time. If you choose the wrong one you may need adjustments which can lead to a system that does not perform as you wish.

Let us help answer all of your questions and get you started on your solar journey.
